Miss Grit Always Has ‘Drag Race’ On
Their art may be avant-garde, but their Shelf is surprisingly relatable.
Miss Grit is so back. The experimental artist (government name Margaret Sohn) recently released an expansive single titled “Tourist Mind,” their first new project since 2023’s genre- and gender-bending Follow the Cyborg. But while the release keeps their robotic, existential theme going, Sohn’s Shelf is deeply human.
We caught up with the musician to talk about everything they’ve been loving, from Björk to RuPaul.

On EUSEXUA by FKA Twigs:
“I just think it's the best-sounding album I've heard in a long time — especially the single ‘EUSEXUA.’ Just a really impressive soundscape and everything that's built within it. I really love the production, and, of course, her singing.”
On “Blissing Me” by Björk:
“I especially have that as a favorite right now, because I'm trying to learn how to play the mini Celtic harp, and a lot of Björk songs on this album have harps in it. I really like this one in particular; it’s been playing in my head every day.”
“The Host is one of my favorite Bong Joon Ho movies. In all his movies, I really love the characters he builds, and I think they're all really charming, but this movie in particular had the most charming cast to me. I tried to go to the spot in Korea where it was filmed — in Seoul — because I was really into this movie, but it looks completely different, so I was kind of bummed. It highlighted a lot of Seoul’s bridges and the Han river that runs through the city.”
On Long Winded:
“Long Winded is hosted by Gabby Windey, who is a former Bachelorette. Her clips are going viral every day, but I think someone put it as ‘She's just constantly spewing poetry.’ It's interesting the way her mind works — to hear that and be in her world.”
“Honestly, it's just always on my TV in the background when I'm doing busy work or cleaning. I always have it on because I live alone. And even though I like a lot of alone time, I think it's still nice to hear. Drag queens are the type of people who just bring me lots of joy, and also the laughter and drama.”
“It's the live-action version of an anime. I've watched it with a few people trying to get them into it, and some of them get annoyed with how unrealistic it is, but I think it really plays into the theatrics of anime, which I really like. The CGI and world-building of it is also very beautiful and well done. It’s one of those shows that fuels me creatively to see the expansiveness of it.”
