My expectations were extremely high when Neon invited me to an exclusive early screening of Together, Michael Shanks' new body horror film, which was released at Sundance earlier this year. It did, after all, have a unique 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating at the time. Notwithstanding its flaws, the movie unquestionably offers a terrifying, gory, and darkly humorous experience.

The plot of Together centers on Tim (Dave Franco) and Millie (Alison Brie), a couple on the verge of breaking up with the city due to Millie's new teaching position. But as the film progresses, it features some of the most stomach-churning body horror since 2024's sensational The Substance, swiftly turning their new beginning into a terrifying nightmare.
The intricacies of a co-dependent relationship are masterfully portrayed by the real-life couple Brie and Franco, who bring a tangible chemistry to their parts. Their performances serve as the film's emotional pivot, adding weight to the growing chaos and horror.
However, Together stutters a little in the third act, losing some of its compelling energy as some of the plot points become too obvious. Despite its narrative flaws, the film is unquestionably entertaining due to its unique blend of humor, horror, and poignant commentary on relationships.
In the end, Together is a gripping film that is full of gory surprises, heart-stopping scenes, and a perceptive examination of personal boundaries and dependency. It is a twisted, timely commentary wrapped in visceral thrills, and despite its flaws, hard not to enjoy.
