Last Forever by LANY? Zainab says 4/5
Shelf RATED | Music
On Friday, September 5th, LANY released the second single from their upcoming album, Soft. Paul Klein, the band’s frontman, revealed online that “Last Forever”, the final track on the project, was written on July 11, 2024 with Nicole Galyon and King Henry in Sterling, Kansas, only one month after he was hit by a car. The accident, which nearly killed him last June, changed his life forever.

One of LANY’s greatest strengths are heart-achingly romantic ballads (cue “Cause’ You Have To”, “you!”, “Valentine’s Day” or “Malibu Nights”), and “Last Forever” fits right in—while offering so much more. As with most LANY songs, the melody is an earworm; the piano progression will stay with you for days. And yet, “Last Forever” is more than a love song—it’s a reflection on survival, resilience, and hope. While it carries the dreamy, romantic bedroom pop sounds LANY fans anticipate, the track feels poised, deliberate, and solemn in a way we haven’t heard since Malibu Nights.
The music video for “Last Forever” recounts Klein’s accident and charts his journey towards acceptance and emotional healing. In his own words:
“In this world of sin and brokenness - adversity is constant, betrayal is rampant, and disappointment is inevitable. the easiest thing would be to let life and people harden you and turn you numb. but, then, what is the point of being alive if you can’t feel anything? for me, forgiveness was and is the only way forward. that’s what the final scene from our ‘last forever’ video represents. the embrace is ‘I forgive you. i release you. i bless you.’ because protecting my softness is protecting my essence, and i wanna leave this earth as soft as i came into it”
