Companion? Steven says 4/5
SHELF RECS | Films
When I heard the same people behind Barbarian were making Companion, I was already in line. Barbarian was wild—like, the twist at the halfway point had me screaming. Naturally, I expected Companion to hit me with a similar plot twist that’d make me clutch my pearls…But nope. The major twist—that Iris (Sophie Thatcher) is a literal sex robot—was already spoiled in the trailer. Like…why would they do that?! Imagine sitting in the theater and hearing Jack Quaid casually say, “Iris, go to sleep.” The whole place would’ve been GAGGED.

But even without that shock factor, this movie delivered in other ways. It gave me everything I needed in a satirical takedown of men and their desperate need for control. Jack starts off as your typical “nice guy,” all charming and considerate…until Iris stops emotionally needing him. Then boom—he loses his entire mind. Jack Quaid played it so well I actually wanted to punch him through the screen. Men really ain’t shit sometimes, and this movie captures that perfectly.
On the flip side, Sophie Thatcher ATE. She gave us a character to root for and nailed every single scene. This is prime “good for her” cinema—up there with Gone Girl and Midsommar.
Now, was this movie scary? Eh, not really. It’s more of a sci-fi thriller/comedy vibe, but that’s not a bad thing. It’s fun, unpredictable, and kept me engaged the whole time. By the end, I was fully entertained…and a little paranoid. Classic thriller move.
Final thoughts: Skip the trailer if you can, and go in blind. It’s a wild, messy, and satisfying ride. Good for HER!
