80'z by Bb Trickz? Steven says 3/5

SHELF RECS | Music

Bb trickz’s new EP, 80’z, is what happens when a baddie hits shuffle on nostalgia, throws it in a blender with hyper-pop aesthetics, and decides she’s only got 11 minutes to make her point. With eight tracks, clocking in at under 12 minutes total, it’s giving speed-run. While the chaotic brevity kinda slaps, it also leaves me feeling like I just got into a vibe only to be kicked out the club mid-dance break.

Ever since her song-stealing verse on the “Club Classics” remix, I knew Bb trickz was one to watch—and she keeps proving she knows how to command attention. “Not A Pretty Girl” flips Clairo’s “Pretty Girl” into a bratty, bouncy declaration of bad girl energy, and it works. But the magic is hit-or-miss: for every track that pops off (“Tipz & Trickz,” “Malvada,” “Back in the 80’s”), there’s another that falls flat, is underwritten or just plain dull.

Still, 80’z has its moments. It’s perfect for casual listening, summer drives with the windows down, or pre-gaming with your hottest, most unserious friends. The EP doesn’t overstay its welcome—it barely stays at all—and maybe that’s the point. Bb trickz isn’t here to explain herself. She’s here for a good time, not a long one.
